A Thesis on the Battlefield

Images and advertisements for the upcoming BATTLEFIELD 3 uses a image of a strong soldier highlighted from the background to draw in the viewer, and get them interested in the picture, while the relatively empty background invokes pathos focused on the true bleak outlook of war

The image for the upcoming BATTLEFIELD 3 uses pathos by making you feel for the downcast soldier, while using ethos as the Battlefield game series is extremely well known in certain circles.

The image for the upcoming BATTLEFIELD 3 features a wide open space that emphasizes the logo and the impassive soldier, which prevents confusion about what the game is and what its about.

Effecting the Masses

This image is a desktop background for the upcoming game Mass Effect 3. The image itself is an advertisement, that fans of the video game series will willingly display, for free, on there computers. This image appeals to Pathos in many ways. The image depicts the new default female Shepard for the game that is to be featured on the box of the collector’s edition of the game. Many fans may feel an emotional attachment to this version of the hero of the game because they were given a host of options to vote on for the new default female Shepard and may buy the more expensive collector’s edition for that reason. For those who did know of the series, or did not intend to buy the game may change their mind do to seeing this heroine and finding her attractive or admirable in her particularly Bad-@$$ pose. This image has a small amount of ethos to it as well. Though small the name of the developer and publisher of Mass Effect 3 are in the corner of the image. Those who may not know of the game series but know these companies may purchase the game or the previous games in the series because they believe that this developer is known for making good games, or the publisher is known for publishing good games. Or it may convince someone who played the previous games because they believe the Mass Effect series has a good reputation. There is not much of an appeal to logos in this picture. As a fictional work it has little basis on fact. The only facts it truly provides is one of the renditions of the main character, a weapon you may use, the developer and producer, the name of the game, and the release date. These fact do not attempt to persuade you into buying the game, they are only there to so one who does want to buy the game this image is for will know what it’s called, when it’s coming out, and who’s making it. The kairos of the image is constantly changing. The image is distributed through the internet so many will not find it unless they are purposely looking for it or stumble on it accidentally. If someone chooses to display it as their background it could appeal very well at an informal gathering, or a gaming conference. It would not work very well at a formal business weekend, unless it is about projected sales of the game or theorizing how well the image would work in an ad campaign.

Images of life

On a day to day basis we are bombarded with so many ads and commercial images it’s almost sickening. They are everywhere, on billboards, buses, television, the radio, and the Internet. I do not enjoy watching television as much as I used to because of the ads and the degradation of the quality of the shows. The ads try to make you think you need something because it’s innovative or it will make your life easier or it would just be bad not to have it. I must admit, I have fallen prey to add. Many times i have craved a Coca-Cola after one of their ads, and many videogame trailers I watch on YouTube only want me to buy the games I’m looking up more. As much as i despise these images we are continually bombarded with, i must admit they are a necessary evil. The ads pay for some of my favorite websites and without them i would not be able to enjoy reading fan fiction, of watching YouTube videos. The truth is these adds my not be so bad if they weren’t constantly badgering us to buy their products. They are so demanding and insistent that if the just got put on the backburner a minute and let the consumer take a step back and consider the product the companies forcing these ads down are throat may actually increase profits. Some of the best commercials don’t ask you to buy their products at all. They simply show a situation of where the product is used, such as a thirsty man looking for finding and consuming a coke, and then there over. That makes a person think “a coke would be extremely refreshing right now.” If more ads were like this they would not be so bad but many are rude and irritating and are ruining our society in the way they portray our culture. It needs to end before America becomes the proverbial toilet of the world’s culture. It’s not only our ads that do this but many of our television shows as well. Due to the lack of quality writing in these shows the just record the worst aspects of society and paste it into the minds of the people of our country. These images glamorize ignorance, violence, teen pregnancy, irresponsibility, and mock our society’s problems rather than fix them, and it needs to stop before the damage is irreversible.
